Here's hoping for a great new year! I was also granted the chance to see Avatar in the first few days of 2010, and like Pastrami I also found it predictable. It was still good fun, though! Some of the imagery is truly awe-inspiring, even if it is almost all CGI. Ignoring, for a moment, that it was pretty easy to know what was coming next - it was non-stop fast-moving action almost all the way through. Since I was there primarily for the entertainment of my 8 year old son, MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!! :)
For 3 hours, my son accomplished what he can normally only manage for a few minutes at a time: undivided attention. His tics (Tourette Syndrome) disappeared for the duration of the movie, and he was even engrossed enough to take off the ear protectors that go with us to every event that's conducted with noise stimulation. Watching him, I was able to forget the fact that "yep, here comes the next expected event" feeling and just enjoy the immersion in sight & sound. I thought it was a pretty good laugh to see Sigourney Weaver comp'ed into a tailed, overstretched smurf!! I also like the way the movie kept most of the "advanced technology" within the realm of the theoretically possible based on extrapolations of what's going on right now - after all, it is supposed to be SCIENCE-fiction!!
Happy 2010 all!
I liked the casting of Sigourney Weaver. I actually didn't know she was in it until she came up out of that chamber-which made it pretty cool...last time I saw her coming out of a chamber like that was in Aliens, right? Which made me wonder if that was why she was cast, along with the new and improved hulking metal housing do-hickeys that the military was using, just like the one she used to fight an alien...
ReplyDeleteThanks for making your post all sappy and feel-good so that I end up looking like the bad guy!
haha
Sorry man, that wasn't quite the way it was intended to read! :)
ReplyDeleteI think you may be right on the link with the Aliens movies - a lot of the tech bore similarities that way. Wonder how much of Ms. Weaver's money was behind Avatar....
